A Sensitive Renovation with a Contemporary Vision for a Listed former Mill House

Our clients bought a former mill house in rural Oxfordshire that was run-down and unlived in for some years.  They knew it had the potential to become a wonderful and characterful family home, surrounded by established gardens, woodland and hills beyond.

Collaborating with our clients on their vision, we developed a sympathetic renovation whilst writing a bold new chapter in the home’s history, designing a contemporary new extension and seamlessly integrating old with new.

In the modern extension wing, light, timber and glazing create a large new living area that transforms the kitchen-dining areas. The design orientation gives views through every window out across the garden to the hills beyond.

The extension integrates seamlessly with the older part of the house, retaining the venerable charm and character in the secondary living spaces, study, entrance hall, wine room and boot room.

In the main suite upstairs, we created different layouts in 3D digital designs, allowing the clients to ‘walk around’ the space to decide what would work best for them. Retaining the original beams and entrance doorways evokes feelings of sanctuary and restfulness in all of the rooms.

Overall, this finely-detailed and painstaking restoration in close partnership with the contractor WG Carter has breathed new life into this heritage Grade II listed house, to return it to a much-loved family home and country retreat – for now and generations to come.
