Trends & Influences from London Design Week 2021
The HG Interiors team headed to London Design Week to explore the latest trends in patterns, materials and craftsmanship. As we gradually emerge from a year of lockdown restrictions, the design focus this season has increasingly turned to bright and bold ways to bridge the gap between our homes and the outside world.
Fabrics
We’ve enjoyed taking inspiration from a wide variety of fabrics. ‘Reef’, by Andrew Martin, is a flowing outdoor fabric design inspired by tropical coral beds. The raw and organic aesthetic mirrors the unique shapes found in nature, making it a perfect choice for outdoor furniture upholstery such as cushions and patio seating.
De Le Cuona uses a sheer linen curtain fabric to create ‘Atelier’, a design that emulates the London skyline through a linear, interlocking structure. Its range of colours follow a muted, neutral palette suited to a contemporary interior.
‘Melianthe’ is a curtaining fabric designed by Casamance At Colony. The delicate lacy stitching on linen voile evokes the leaf pattern of the South African melianthus and creates a subtle connection between the indoor and outdoor living spaces.
Lamps
This unique and playful wall light is aptly named ‘Medusa’. Designed by Julian Chichester, the spiralling design is inspired by Royere’s playful post-war signature style and injects a sense of quirky cheerfulness into the home.
A more serious and calming piece, the ‘Frank’ table lamp is designed by Paolo Moschino and sculpted in cast plaster.
The painted bronze verdigris finish evokes the intermingling colours and shapes of flowing water for a deep and quiet connection to the outdoors.
A subtle reference to the natural world is again captured in the design of Collier Webb’s ‘CEP’ table light. The mushroom-like lamp is crafted from translucent alabaster with an Antique Brass connecting detail between the dome and base.
Seating
For a splash of uplifting colour, the ‘Gresham’ stool from David Seyfried is well suited as a statement piece in a tranquil sitting room scheme. The seat is upholstered in ‘Peru’ fabric from C&C Milano, while the timber legs evoke an elegant bamboo aesthetic for an exotic feel.
Now is the time to be designing a comfortable outdoor space in which to relax and enjoy the warmer months. Choosing the right outdoor furniture is a key part of creating a stylish yet functional space – we spotted the Tessa Outdoor armchair which would compliment a modern, dialled-back aesthetic. The chair, designed by Antonio Citterio, is constructed of solid turned iroko wood, with traditional joinery that keeps the focus on the natural texture and feel of the raw material.
