Striking The Perfect Balance Between Old And New

At HollandGreen, we believe in creating harmony between heritage buildings and newly built structures. Whether preserving the character of a historic property or integrating state-of-the-art features, our design teams bring a modern and creative perspective to traditional designs.

Taking a fresh approach to heritage buildings

We find that the best way to preserve the integrity of the structure is often by drawing a line between the old and the new: restoring and illuminating the original surviving elements while adding bold, design-led features that bring the building back into practical use.

This often painstaking approach involves the careful unravelling of the building’s history through a process of research, during which we discover as much as we can about its story. Once we’ve established the context, we consider the client’s needs and aspirations. Perhaps more space is needed or a reimagining of the existing space to create a better flow that’s more conducive to family life. We also need a good feel for the client’s preferred style so we can capture the right aesthetic.

Embracing technology for heritage restoration

To ensure our heritage projects meet modern standards while preserving historical integrity, we embrace the latest technological advancements. For example, 3D laser scanning is particularly valuable, capturing intricate details and providing a comprehensive view of the building’s condition. This technology allows us to create accurate digital models that aid in planning restorations and renovations. These models help us identify potential issues early and develop solutions that respect the building’s history while meeting contemporary needs.

In addition, virtual reality (VR) walkthroughs offer clients an immersive experience, allowing them to visualise proposed changes in a realistic setting. This technology helps clients make informed decisions and provides a clear understanding of how modern elements will integrate with historical features. It also aids in gaining approval from heritage bodies by showcasing the sympathetic nature of our designs.

Collaboration with heritage experts

Sustainability is at the core of our approach to heritage restoration. We strive to use eco-friendly materials and energy-efficient systems that enhance the building’s functionality without compromising its historical value. From solar panels discreetly integrated into the design to insulation that improves energy efficiency, we ensure our projects are environmentally responsible.

Our team collaborates closely with heritage experts and local authorities to ensure our designs meet stringent conservation standards. This collaboration ensures that our projects not only preserve the past but also secure a sustainable future for these valuable structures.

Interior design for longevity

Decorating trends come and go, but great design is timeless. Our ethos is to create interior design that is sympathetic to the features and era of a property, enhancing its character and bringing enduring elegance to a home.

One of our favourite techniques is to blend fresh contemporary pieces with unique vintage finds. For instance, we might combine an antique console table or sideboard with a statement lamp, or use a modern wallpaper in a heritage home bathroom. When it comes to furniture, we choose pieces with simple, classic lines, avoiding overly fashionable or ornate designs that may date quickly.

Colour is also a wonderful way to strike a balance between old and new. Classic neutral tones like whites, greys, beiges and earth tones for walls create a timeless backdrop that can be easily updated with accessories such as cushions, throws or wall art. Natural wood, stone, leather and metal are another signature of our interior designs. These materials develop character and beauty with age, remaining stylish over time.
