Adding Garden Colour, Structure & Style
Early New Year is the Perfect Time for Planting Plans
Now is the time to start planning new planting schemes ready for summer. It’s also a good way to chase away the winter blues and imagine the indoor-outdoor living you can look forward to!
If your house build project is nearing completion and the site has become a bit of a quagmire, thinking now about trees, hedging and perennials will give them the time they need to establish before the warmer months arrive.
Action taken in the late winter months is also one of the most cost-effective times to plant large quantities of trees and hedging and significant savings can be made on rootball plants on large planting projects.
In the cottage garden design above and below, the client’s brief was to create a beautiful English garden for a young family, and at the heart of our designs was the wish to create a magical place that would create many memories and special moments. The borders were prepped in winter and transformed with a huge display of colour, texture and movement to be enjoyed in the summer months, with the beds developing further this year.
Painting with Nature
Creating a successful planting scheme that changes with the seasons to give year-round pleasure is a beautiful art form that not only enriches our lives but supports wildlife and biodiversity too. It really is like painting with nature.
One of the most exciting stages of a garden design build is when the plants start to arrive. The introduction of green immediately transforms the look and feel and starts to take on the atmosphere we set out to achieve.
Every planting plan is unique to each client. We spend time understanding the site, the preferred landscaping and planting styles and begin by introducing the bones of the scheme – the evergreen trees and hedging that will give form, structure and year-round interest and privacy.
Unique & Individual Planting Styles
A successful planting scheme always starts with a comprehensive brief and we work with our clients to establish the styles and colours they like and the plants that will thrive in their gardens. A collection of images that inspire is always helpful at this stage and can be easily created on Pinterest.
We design to create special views and privacy as we did with the garden build below. Starting with a welcoming approach to the front door, a specimen Bonsai tree was selected as a focal point and grounded with effective repeat underplanting to complement the style of the newly-renovated home.
Inspired by Japanese-style planting and a palette of greens, whites and an accent of purple, our design team created a naturally calming atmosphere in the back garden to relax and entertain, and a lighting scheme that created a stunning outside evening space.

Transforming the View when Building Work is Complete
HollandGreen Landscapes develop projects for clients who have used HollandGreen throughout their build, but equally we work alongside other appointed architects, builders and landscapers. Whoever is on the design team, our aim is to transform the gardens and add the finishing touches with a planting scheme unique to each client and project.
Our planting service covers landscape plans for planning approval, to concept and detailed planting plans designed to thrive in the individual space and location. We source quality specimen trees and plants and lay them out on site to best effect.
Irrigation and lighting often go hand in hand with our planting service and the key is to start planning as soon as possible to position ducting for power and water before the hard landscaping is complete. Timed irrigation will help your new plantings thrive and shadow effects from garden lighting will transform the atmosphere at night, extending the time you enjoy outside.
