Belgian Farmhouse Interiors

Often described as a carefully crafted balance between rustic, elegant, and contemporary, Belgian style interior design is a striking and beautiful way to decorate a room. The design merges rustic elements with its own more polished and refined take, for a home that is authentic, inviting, and most importantly lived in – all the while maintaining a contemporary and luxurious feel.

The Interior Design team at HollandGreen are drawing inspiration from this style of design for one of their current projects: the interior renovation of a farmhouse in rural Oxfordshire – and highlights the defining characteristics when looking to integrate this style into a space. Here we explore some of the themes and influences that we will be building on the design journey – we look forward to sharing more as the project progresses.

Colour

A neutral colour palette is central to Belgian design. The initial concept designs and moodboards for our project bring together soft browns and greys across each element of the interior design, relying on texture to create interest and depth rather than bold highlights and accents.

Materiality

The design style draws strongly from nature, opting for raw, natural materials such as timber, stone and ceramics. The raw and unfinished nature of this material palette adds a unique variety of texture to a space, with unique patinas and markings ensuring plenty of character throughout each piece.

Natural fibres, particularly linen, are a key highlight in the Belgian interior style. We will be integrating these materials across the upholstery, curtains, throw pillows and sofa covers, adding warmth, softness, and understated elegance to bedrooms and living rooms alike.

Furniture

The key to choosing furniture is paring back to a few select pieces with simple, clean designs. This focus on simplicity allows spaces to remain uncluttered and simple, while still welcoming and lived in.

Furniture styles typically draw from a mixture of traditional and contemporary designs, giving the space a familiar and inviting feel while still seeming modern. This can be achieved in any number of ways, such as opting for rough, textured pottery sitting side by side with a sleek timber dining table or modern light fixture.

Lighting

Belgian design particularly emphasises the importance of natural light in creating a warm and homely space. Incorporating plenty of large windows and glass walls floods each living space with a welcoming glow that adds depth to the design.

For our current project, we’re drawing on inspiration from some of our favourite Belgian Interior Designers, like Axel Veroordt. Our mood boards feature the neutral tones and weathered surfaces that characterise his own projects, providing a backdrop against a fusion of timeless pieces and materials that give a sense of history and personality to our designs. We look forward to sharing more as the design journey continues.
